Ok, i got it to work as you did ... netmaker in docker-compose with CLIENT_MODE:on and fully contained... "default mode" if you will, BUT... with the custom NODE_ID then,

netclient join -n main --name hostclientname --port 51842  -t  MYTOKEN

i think one thing that had been causing issues is the name's were also colliding
